Clareview Farm
The Clareview Farm site operates at the boundary of two dairy paddocks, one (to N and W) managed with "regenerative" practice (multi-diverse pasture species mix, no mineral-N fertiliser), the other (to S and E) with "conventional" practice (ryegrass/white clover, repeatedly N fertiliser application). Both paddocks are irrigated over summer. The site is located on a commercial farm on the Mid-Canterbury plains, South Island, New Zealand, owned and managed by Align Farms (https://alignfarms.co.nz/farm/clareview/). The Fluxnet site name is NZ-Cla.The research is supported by the Strategic Science Investment Fund from New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and by the New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre.
The eddy-covariance system includes a multi-gas analyser providing H2O, CO2, CH4, N2O, O3 and NH3 (with the main purpose of measuring N2O emissions). Measurements began on 4 October 2022 and are ongoing.
CSV files (2022-2025)
These files are formatted as input files for the FLUXNET2025 database.
Both paddocks are grazed 10 to 12 times annually, and in order to gap-fill the CO2 fluxes in a meaningful fashion this abrupt change in biomass needs to be represented by a suitable driver. For that, we constructed the variables "BIOMASS_AG_REG" and "BIOMASS_AG_CON" (for regenerative and conventional pasture, respectively) from direct biomass sampling before and after the removal events and interpolated across the regrowth periods. The units of these variables are g dry-matter m^-2.
CO2 and CH4 fluxes during times of cow-herd presence (short intensive grazing events) are removed because the animal emissions would overwhelm the CO2 and CH4 exchange between the plant-soil ecosystem and the atmosphere.
"P_RAIN" is precipitation, "P" is precipitation plus irrigation.
See the file "BADM-Site_General_Info-v2023-NZ-Cla.xlsx" for further details.
