Boolcoomatta
The Boolcoomatta flux tower monitors a saltbush plain with less than 180 mm of annual rainfall in eastern South Australia since August 2025.
It's purpose is monitoring carbon, water, and energy exchange of a saltbush shrubland in an desert environment typical for the majority of inland Australia.
The tower is located inside the Boolcoomatta Station Reserve, now actively managed by Bush Heritage Australia to restore the former sheep grazing country. The reserve was a sheep station for about 150 years. In 2006 it was taken over by Bush Heritage Australia for restoration.
The instrument tower is 7 m tall. It features a full range of eddy covariance equipment, and micrometeorology sensors. Four pits with soil moisture sensors, soil temperature sensors, and soil heat flux plates provide below-ground data. A soil moisture profile covers depths from -5 cm to -100 cm.
The Boolcoomatta flux tower is operated by the University of Melbourne (Site PI Stefan Arndt. operator Markus Loew)
